per person

In 1970 Machu Picchu was declared a National Park and Historic Sanctuary, not only for the ruins and the trail, but also for the rich variety of flora and fauna it contains. Book this Lares trek to Machu Picchu with Enchanted Expeditions today!

Itinerary:

Day 1: Depart Cuzco early in the morning on private transportation. Driving through the Urubamba Sacred Valley, passengers will arrive in Lares late in the morning. During the rest of the morning hikers will have the chance to enjoy a relaxing bath in the hot springs of Lares. After lunch, a 2-hour trek will begin until the campsite in Huacawasy is reached.

Day 2: After breakfast the group will visit the community of Huacawasi. People here produce some of the finest weavings in Peru, and we will have the chance to observe their technique, as they hand-make ponchos and other garments. The day starts with a climb to the Yanahuara Pass, the second of the trip at 4,100 meters/13,451 feet above sea level, from where there is a stunning view of Mount Veronica (5,750 meters/18,865 feet above sea level). After that comes a descent all the way down to Epsaycocha Lake, the night’s campsite. (B/L/D).

Day 3: The trail leads downhill into the valley, where the group will eventually arrive at the Willoc community, where lunch will be served. From Willoc, passengers will make a 2-hour trek to Pumamarka along beautiful Inka terraces, finally arriving in the village of Ollanta. Situated in a fertile river valley and sheltered by mammoth mountains, this ancient Inka village is considered one of the most important living museums in the world. This is a perfect place to appreciate the vast archeological complex of Ollantaytambo and a wide variety of flowers and birds. From Ollantaytambo, passengers will board the train to Aguas Calientes, the town just below Machu Picchu, and spend the night in a comfortable hostel. (B/L/D).

Day 4: After breakfast, the group will take a bus up to Machu Picchu for a full-day guided tour of the ancient Inka citadel.

Day 5: At mid morning, we’ll take the train back to the Sacred Valley. After lunch and on route to Cuzco we will visit the Maras salt mines and Chincheros
