Overland Trek to Kaieteur Falls

Overland Trek to Kaieteur Falls

per person

Kaieteur National Park (KNP), Guyana’s first legally protected area is known for the majestic Kaieteur Falls, considered to be one of the highest single drop (741 ft) water falls in the world. However, in addition to the majestic Kaieteur Falls, the rich biodiversity, some of which are endemic to Kaieteur National Park, ensures a highly educational, adventurous and challenging experience while traversing through pristine Amazonian rainforest. The overland trek entails traveling by land, water and foot (hiking approximately 1,800 ft above sea level) to the Kaieteur Plateau and takes between 3-5 days depending on your interest and ability.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Depart Georgetown 06.00 hrs via 4*4 Vehicles onto the bauxite mining township of Linden before entering the Lethem/Brazil Trail. After a brief stop at Mabura for a snack, we will set us off through the thick rainforest, home to numerous species of wildlife.

Approximately five hours after departure we arrive at Guyana’s largest river, the mighty Essequibo where crossing is by pontoon. Another two hours we arrive at the gold and diamond mining township of Madhia. After a local meal, we continue along rugged trails to the Potaro River (Pamela Landing), where a boat ride along the Potaro River paved by the Ayanganna Mountains will take us to Amatuk Falls (Island). A refreshing swim or bath in the river, dinner and some tales from the local guides will set you off to sleep in hammocks (outdoor camp). (L/D)

Day 2: After breakfast, we trek around Amatuk Falls, afterwards we continue by boat to Waratuk Falls (a few miles into the lower boundary of Kaieteur National Park) where we will have lunch and interact with the KNP Rangers. We continue onto Tukeit (foot of the Kaieteur Mt, Ayangana Mt Range or end of the Kaieteur gorge) where we will cook dinner and overnight in an outdoor camp equipped with hammocks. (B/L/D)

Day 3: After breakfast, we climb up the “oh my god” mountain to Kaieteur Plateau, approx. 1,800 ft above sea level. The climb takes approx. 2-4 hrs depending on your level of fitness. A hearty lunch and rest will reenergize you for a brief tour of Kaieteur Top and to observe the swifts (specie of swallows) returning to their habitat behind the falls. A visit to Menzies landing (small transient community within the Park) for some “gaf” and few drinks before dinner will surely add to a good night’s rest in the Kaieteur National Park Guesthouse (hammocks/beds depending on availability). (B/L/D)

Day 4: After breakfast, a detailed tour of Kaieteur Top and Falls with possible sightings of the golden frog, cock of the rock, and other rare and endemic flora and fauna of Kaieteur National Park will conclude a very unique adventure. We all return to have lunch before departing Kaieteur Top via aircraft, arriving at Ogle Municipal Airport 16.00 hrs where our vehicles will return you safely to your Hotel or place of stay. (B/L)
