A Trip to Rejuvenate your Soul – Transformational Nature Travel in Ecuador
This is an article about the transformational power of nature you can experience by taking a guided nature tour to the diverse, friendly and beautiful South American country of Ecuador. During the midst of the pandemic in August 2021, my wife and I decided that we needed to travel in 2022. COVID travel protocols were in place and often changing, so we were considering a domestic trip to Hawaii. When we learned that Hawaii was being overwhelmed by tourists, my wife suggested taking a trip to the Galapagos. I thought a bit risky, since one positive COVID test could cancel the trip, but worth the risk. We were 8 months from departure date so things were a bit uncertain. We also decided to research including a trip to the Amazon to complement the Galapagos.
Since I’ve worked in ecotourism in Central America since the 90s, I was tasked with all logistics – airfare, arrival/overnights in Quito, and in-country transfers. For a new destination country, this is can be quite overwhelming. While the internet and our connected world brings many benefits, there is what I call “over information” in the travel sector. I reached out to some travel industry contacts and Enchanted Expeditions was recommended by a long-term marine ecotourism client for our trip to the Galapagos. Debora Moceo, was the Enchanted Expeditions contact person that we worked with.
From first contact through our return post-trip, Debora & the Enchanted Expeditions team were outstanding! Debora put together a fantastic 16-day itinerary that included 2-nights in Quito; 8-day liveaboard cruise of the Galapagos; overnight near the airport and transfer to Amazon and 5 days at the indigenous operated Napo Wildlife Center. The entire trip logistics were seamless. We were greeted upon our late-night arrival to Quito and escorted via private transportation to our hotel in old town Quito. Debora and Enchanted Expeditions gave us great recommendations for activities and restaurants in Quito, with lots of options so we could go at our own pace. Hotel locations were ideal and had local cultural charm and not your international luxury chain hotel where every room is pretty much the same no matter where you are in the world. Some people like this consistency, I prefer local charm and cultural connectivity which Enchanted Expeditions delivered.
For the Galapagos, we did the 8-day/7-night Tower Itinerary on the 16 PAX ship the Beluga. Having never been on a liveaboard ship, my wife and I were a little worried about seasickness and I suffer from mild claustrophobia. Debora was sensitive to these issues and selected the perfect cabin. The Galapagos trip was amazing from start to finish!! We arrived in Galapagos from the flight from Quito around mid-day. We were whisked off to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island and the giant land tortoises. Something you see all the time in photos of Galapagos, but an amazing experience none-the-less. The last full day we snorkeled with hammerhead sharks!!, a thrilling experience and one that’s best saved for later in the trip after plenty of time in the water. And the Galapagos departure day, we visited a mangrove estuary with incredible birds and rays before being dropped off at the airport. An amazingly full and well-orchestrated itinerary, highly recommended!! Never a dull moment.
We then returned to Quito and stayed near the airport for our morning flight to the Amazon the next day to Napo Wildlife Center. Great highland birds on the grounds of our hotel for those interested in birding. The next day it was raining when we arrive in Coca, gateway city to Rio Napo Amazon region. We took a 2-hour motor boat ride, then transferred to paddle canoes for about a 1 hour trip up a small tributary to the indigenous operated Napo Wildlife Center. The rain stopped when we were in the canoes and the wildlife exploded around us. First the common, but outrageous Joatzin birds that have a call that sounds like heavy-breathing. Then the Squirrel Monkeys, a big troup all around us, and a small Black Caiman. As our guides paddled us upstream, the wildness of place set in. We emerged to a small lagoon and the cabins and observation tower were standing out like a forgotten kingdom! Amazingly modern and comfortable for how remote the location is. The five-story observation tower was amazing with incredible views and great for wildlife observation. Upon arrival and welcome by our indigenous hosts, we were also greeted by a White-faced Capuchin Monkey eating bananas and wondering what we were all about. The next 5 days were filled with exploration by canoe and on foot. For me the highlights were seeing 7 different species of monkeys, observing one of the famous “licks” with parrots, parakeets and a menacing boa constrictor, heard a family of Giant River Otters, and seeing a Pink River Dolphin on our departure back to Quito.
The guides were superb! I highly recommend Enchanted Expeditions and the combination of both the Galapagos and Amazon. A trip of a life-time, and probably more important in these times of COVID, both my wife and I returned rejuvenated and inspired with a strong feeling of optimism for the future, something we really needed. Un viaje para Rejuvenecer tu Alma – Viajes de Naturaleza Transformacional en Ecuador
En medio de la pandemia en agosto de 2021, mi esposa y yo decidimos que necesitábamos viajar en 2022. Los protocolos de viaje de COVID estaban vigentes y cambiaban con frecuencia, por lo que estábamos considerando un viaje nacional a Hawái. Cuando supimos que Hawái estaba siendo abrumado por los turistas, mi esposa sugirió hacer un viaje a Galápagos. Pensé que era un poco arriesgado, ya que una prueba de COVID positiva podría cancelar el viaje, pero valía la pena el riesgo. Estábamos a 8 meses de la fecha de salida, por lo que las cosas eran un poco inciertas. También decidimos investigar incluyendo un viaje al Amazonas para complementar las Galápagos.

Me comuniqué con algunos contactos de la industria de viajes y Enchanted Expeditions fue recomendado por un cliente de ecoturismo marino a largo plazo para nuestro viaje a Galápagos. Debora Moceo, fue la persona de contacto de Enchanted Expeditions con la que trabajamos.
¡Desde el primer contacto hasta nuestro regreso posterior al viaje, Debora y el equipo de Enchanted Expeditions fueron excepcionales! Debora armó un fantástico itinerario de 16 días que incluía 2 noches en Quito; Crucero vida-a-bordo de 8 días por Galápagos; noche cerca del aeropuerto y traslado a Amazonas y 5 días en el Napo Wildlife Center operado por indígenas. Toda la logística del viaje fue impecable. Nos recibieron a nuestra llegada a Quito a altas horas de la noche y nos acompañaron en transporte privado a nuestro hotel en el casco antiguo de Quito. Debora y Enchanted Expeditions nos dieron excelentes recomendaciones de actividades y restaurantes en Quito, con muchas opciones para que pudiéramos ir a nuestro propio ritmo. Las ubicaciones de los hoteles eran ideales y tenían un encanto cultural local y no su hotel de cadena de lujo internacional donde cada habitación es prácticamente igual sin importar en qué parte del mundo se encuentre. A algunas personas les gusta esta coherencia, yo prefiero el encanto local y la conectividad cultural que ofrece Enchanted Expeditions.
Para las Galápagos, hicimos el Itinerario de la Tower de 8 días/7 noches en el barco Beluga de 16 PAX. Como nunca habíamos estado en un barco vida a bordo, mi esposa y yo estábamos un poco preocupados por el mareo y sufría de claustrofobia leve. Debora era sensible a estos problemas y seleccionó la cabina perfecta. ¡El viaje a Galápagos fue increíble de principio a fin! Llegamos a Galápagos del vuelo de Quito alrededor del mediodía. Nos llevaron a las tierras altas de la isla de Santa Cruz y las tortugas terrestres gigantes. Algo que ves todo el tiempo en las fotos de Galápagos, pero sin embargo, una experiencia increíble. ¡El último día completo hicimos esnórquel con tiburones martillo!, una experiencia emocionante y que es mejor reservar para más adelante en el viaje después de mucho tiempo en el agua. Y el día de salida de Galápagos, visitamos un estuario de manglares con aves y rayas increíbles antes de dejarnos en el aeropuerto. Un itinerario increíblemente completo y bien orquestado, ¡muy recomendable! Nunca un momento aburrido.
Luego regresamos a Quito y nos quedamos cerca del aeropuerto para nuestro vuelo matutino al Amazonas al día siguiente al Napo Wildlife Center. Grandes aves de las tierras altas en los terrenos de nuestro hotel para aquellos interesados en la observación de aves. Al día siguiente estaba lloviendo cuando llegamos a Coca, ciudad de entrada a la región amazónica de Río Napo. Tomamos un viaje en bote a motor de 2 horas, luego nos trasladamos a canoas de remo para un viaje de aproximadamente 1 hora por un pequeño afluente hasta el Centro de Vida Silvestre Napo operado por indígenas. La lluvia paró cuando estábamos en las canoas y la vida silvestre explotó a nuestro alrededor. Primero, los pájaros Joatzin comunes, pero escandalosos, que tienen una llamada que suena como una respiración pesada. Luego los Monos Ardilla, una gran tropa a nuestro alrededor, y un pequeño Caimán Negro. Mientras nuestros guías nos remaban río arriba, la naturaleza salvaje del lugar se instaló. ¡Salimos a una pequeña laguna y las cabañas y la torre de observación se destacaban como un reino olvidado! Sorprendentemente moderno y cómodo para lo remota que es la ubicación. La torre de observación de cinco pisos fue increíble con vistas increíbles y excelente para la observación de la vida silvestre. Al llegar y dar la bienvenida a nuestros anfitriones indígenas, también nos recibió un mono capuchino de cara blanca que comía plátanos y se preguntaba de qué se trataba. Los siguientes 5 días estuvieron llenos de exploración en canoa y a pie. Para mí, lo más destacado fue ver 7 especies diferentes de monos, observar uno de los famosos “licks” con loros, periquitos y una boa constrictor amenazante, escuchar a una familia de nutrias gigantes de río y ver un delfín rosado en nuestro regreso a Quito. .
¡Los guías fueron excelentes! Recomiendo encarecidamente Enchanted Expeditions y la combinación de Galápagos y Amazonas. Un viaje único en la vida, y probablemente más importante en estos tiempos de COVID, tanto mi esposa como yo regresamos rejuvenecidos e inspirados con un fuerte sentimiento de optimismo para el futuro, algo que realmente necesitábamos. ¡Gracias Debora y Team Enchanted Expeditions!
