Guyana

South America

Guyana, a nation with a small population, is virtually untouched by tourism and considered to be a hidden treasure in natural beauty, dense rainforests and an extraordinary variety of wildlife.

Guyana has vast areas covered by virgin rainforest, sweeping savannahs, grand serpentine rivers and is home to the majestic Kaieteur Falls, estimated to be five times as high as Niagara Falls.

Visitors travel deep into the rainforest and savannah areas in search of the giant river otter, red howler monkeys, hundreds of bird species, the giant anteater and with luck the elusive jaguar, the largest feline in the Western Hemisphere.

Travel is by river, dirt road or by light plane. Some of its lodges are community-based and double up as research projects.

Guyana can be combined with Suriname and French Guiana. (Contact us for combined itineraries.)

Traveling overland from one Guiana to another is an adventure unto itself. French Guiana, which is technically France, is the most tidy and organized of the three countries. One of the highlights here is the old penal colony of Devil’s Island or Iles du Salut, made famous by Henri Charriere in his biography Papillon.
